Free Potassium Iodide Tablets Available Now

HARRISBURG – Free potassium iodide (KI) pills are available to state residents who live within 10 miles of one the state’s five nuclear power plants – including local communities located near Three Mile Island.

During a radiological emergency, the use of KI tablets can help protect the thyroid gland, which is one of parts of the body that is most sensitive to radiation injury.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health offers KI pills year-round through county and municipal health departments and state health centers for individuals who live or work near a nuclear power plant. Additional details on KI tablet distribution is available online at www.health.pa.gov.
