HARRISBURG – Senator Scott Martin (R-13) will continue to play a leading role in the oversight of high school athletics after being reappointed to serve on the Pennsylvania Athletic Oversight Committee.
The committee reviews all issues pertaining to sports and athletic competitions that are sanctioned by the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA). The committee also receives an annual report from PIAA with recommendations for the General Assembly.
Martin has served as chair of the committee since 2020, when he led successful efforts to allow fall school sports to resume with the proper safety measures in place to protect athletes, coaches, parents and spectators during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“High school athletics offer opportunities for young people to learn critical skills that last a lifetime. It is an honor to support that mission as a member of this panel,” Martin said. “I look forward to working with my colleagues as well as the PIAA to ensure all student-athletes can compete safely and fairly.”
Martin brings a unique perspective to the committee as a decorated high school athlete in both football and wrestling. He attended Lancaster Catholic High School where he not only was an all-star on the football field, but also earned All-American status as a PIAA State Heavyweight Wrestling Champion and National High School Heavyweight Wrestling Champion.
While a student-athlete at Millersville University, he became a three-time 1st Team PSAC Defensive Tackle and two-time All-American. After his college career, he was a free agent camp invitee of the New York Giants in the NFL and had three different stints in the Arena Football League.
Martin also continues to volunteer as a youth sports coach in wrestling and football.
